ASUP Strike Update: Polytechnics Lecturers Vow To Continue Asup Strike After Nec Meeting

It’s really sad to hear that the Polytechnics lecturers has vowed to continue their strike, after so many hoped that the last NEC meeting will be yielding good and positive results.
According to the latest update and information reaching our board today, the National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has resolved to continue its nine months old strike pending the outcome of its meeting with the Senate Committee on Education on the 1st of July. According to the Chairman/President of the union, Mr. Chibuzor Asumogha, who disclosed this information in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria at the end of ASUPs 77th National Executive Council meeting held in Lagos on Saturday, the 28th of June 2014. Where Mr Chibuzor said that a meeting of the committee and some education stakeholders, which was scheduled for June 24 did not hold because no government official honoured the invitation and none of them came to the venue. Here’s the ASUP chairman official statement which we quote below. “That meeting was supposed to be held, resolution reached and agreement signed. It was against the backdrop that we fixed the NEC meeting so that if we have the resolutions, we will come here and suspend the strike and students can return back to school. Incidentally, none of the government official came for the meeting and because of that, the meeting did not hold, so therefore, the strike continues”. The official said the committee deferred the meeting to July 1. Mr Chibuzor Asumogha also disclosed that the union has resolved to continue the strike until the parties would be able to arrive at a mutual understanding and only then, will the ASUP strike be called off. “This is the position of the NEC; we are meeting again next Tuesday. “We have been compromising since 2013. We have continued to agree to suspend the strike but at each point, the federal government always breached the agreement and after everything, nothing is confirmed”. The asup president appealed to the parents and students to continue to be patient and support the union to achieve its goals, which he said, is for the good of the students and generation to come of polytechnics students in Nigeria. Asumogha said, “The thing we are saying is that government should be committed. When is it going to offset the arrears of the salary scale CONTISS 15 it is owing since 2009?’’
