Akinkugbe seeks varsity status for Adeyemi College of Education
emeritus Professor of Medicine, Oladipo Akinkugbe, has expressed disappointment over the delay in the upgrading of the Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo State to the status of a university.
Speaking at the 33rd convocation lecture of the college on Monday, Akinkugbe said the institution was overdue for the new status.
According to him, the college possesses facilities and capacities more than some of the nation’s universities have.
He said, “I have regret that this school has not been upgraded to a university status. I will predict that sooner than later it will be a university.
“Adeyemi College already looks like a university. There are some institutions enjoying that appellation that do not have the kind of facilities in Adeyemi College.”
The college Provost, Prof. Idowu Adeyemi, hailed the establishment of colleges of education, saying that they have contributed to providing qualified teachers for the nation’s primary and post-primary schools.
He said, “In the past 50 years, education, like every other aspect of our social, political and economic life, has been bruised by a combination of factors ranging from paucity of funds, neglect, policy changes to poor implementation of policies, among others.
“In spite of this downward trend, colleges across the country have continually turned hundreds of middle-level teachers to teach in our various primary and secondary schools,” he noted.
Adeyemi also noted that there was a link between the country’s development and its education, which, according to him, depends on the quality of personnel deployed in teaching.
