The Movies That Came Out In First Quarter Of 2017 You Should Find Time To Watch

The first five months of the year has seen a lot of interesting and captivating movies making their way to the cinemas and our homes. From thrillers to dramas and action flicks, there has been non-stop entertainment and fun for movie lovers.

Some more common movies such as John Wick 2 which was returning for a second part and Marvels, Logan where wolverine makes his way to the big screen one last time are fan favourites, some others such as The Black Coats Daughter also deserves the attention of movie lovers.

Logan

Hugh Jackman revives his role one last time as Marvel’s Wolverine in James Mangold’s Logan. The movie is set in 2029 where mutants have almost gone extinct. Logan is hiding out in remote Texas and caring for Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) who is now suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

His recluse life is jolted when a young girl named Laura (Dafne Keen) is required to be transported to a place called Eden in North Dakota and he soon forms a mysterious connection with her. This is soon followed by an upended chase but the movie ends with a surprising melancholy where viewers are left to decide if it is a fitting end for Jackman’s Wolverine tenure.

I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore

This comedy-crime thriller is filled with suspense and despondent optimism. The movie immerses itself in the painful indignities through Nurse Ruth (Melanie Lynsky) who becomes friends with her martial-arts-loving neighbor Tony (Elijah Wood) to recover her stolen belongings after her house is burgled.

The movie is ridiculously hilarious courtesy of a great performance by Lynsky which borders on funny, angry and miserable. The movie finds humour and horror for the entertainment of the viewers, while also inputting hope by bringing to the fore why life should be spent in the company of those that love and appreciate us.

The Blackcoat’s Daughter

This horror thriller movie was written and directed by Osgood Perkins and stars Emma Roberts, Lucy Boynton, Kiernan Shipka, James Remar and Lauren Holly. The movie is a beguiling descent into dark, demonic places and like good horror movies, doesn’t follow a straight course.

Kat (Kiernan Shipka) is left by her parents to spend winter break at her boarding school alongside her popular classmate, Rose (Lucy Boynton). Joan (Emma Roberts) hitchhikes her way to the school, and gets a ride with a contentious couple (James Remark and Lauren Holly).

The mystery and the horror soon unravels as each of the three girls grapple with individual issues ranging from grief to loss which consumes them. It soon becomes revealed that the school is not what it seems like and the fear of been abandoned is encapsulated with the screams that follows the horrors.

John Wick: Chapter 2

This is one of those films that shouldn’t have had a sequel as it pretty much tied up all the loose ends in the first part. Nonetheless, John Wick: Chapter 2 is able to justify its existence with newer actions and carnage that is bound to keep you on the edge of your seats.

Keanu Reeves reprises his role as the ultimate assassin who brings along frenzied firearm warfare, and so much violence that is seen as an art mastered by the assassins. There’s a lot of fearsome brutality which isn’t justifiable given that the reason why John Wick was forced out of retirement in this part is not as gripping as that of the first part.

The specifics of this part and the ending of the movie leaves loose ends that most likely points to the likelihood of another movie.

The Lost City of Z

The Lost city of Z is an adaptation of David Grann’s 2009 non-fiction book of the same name and it follows the story of 20th century British explorer Percy Fawcett’s (Charlie Hunnam) repeated efforts to locate a lost South American civilization that he believed to be more advanced than any previously discovered.

The movie which is written and directed by James Gray boasts classical aesthetics expected of a movie set in the 1920s, offering a wild entrancing piece of grand adventure. Other stars that graced the movie which also touches on class and intolerance include Robert Pattinson, and Sienna Miller.
