The youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-political organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has flayed President Muhammadu Buhari over the recent reversion of the Alvan Ikoku University of Education Owerri, Imo State, to its original status as a college of education.
Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan had, towards the end of his tenure, elevated the institution to a university of education, but shortly after assuming office, Buhari had directed a reversion to status quo.
The Ohanaeze Youth Council said the action was retrogressive and targeted at Ndigbo who are the direct beneficiaries of the institution.
In a press statement issued in Umuahia, the OYC called on the President to rescind the action and restore the elevated status of the institution in the interest of the increasing Igbo youths seeking university education.
Meanwhile, the OYC has released activities lined up for this year's Igbo Youth Day scheduled for September 28 in Umuahia, Abia State capital.
The release, which was signed by the Chairman of the Planning Committee/National Deputy Treasurer, Dr. Kingsley Dozie-Lawrence, stated that the highlight of the event would be a grand civic reception in honour of the immediate past Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. MacJohn Nwaobiala.
The release further said that the event, which would be chaired by a former Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, would feature a thanksgiving service for the emergence of Igbo sons as governors in two South-South states of Rivers and Delta.
