Nollywood actor, Desmond Elliot is in the eye of the storm as his fans have been taking swipes at him for adding the Yoruba name, Olushola, to his name now that he is contesting for a seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Shortly after he declared his intention to run for a seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly and coming out with his campaign posters, Nollywood top actor, director and producer, Desmond ‘Olushola’ Elliot, has been put under fire by his fans, who are surprised at the realisation that he has actually has a Yoruba name, one he has never used until now.
Some of his fans believe he decides to identify with the Yoruba name because of what he wants to achieve and are not happy with him. They believe that he is only putting out that name so that people will see him as a Yoruba man, something he guarded jealously before now. The sudden adoption of the name Olushola has drawn a lot of talking points, even from his colleagues, especially the Yoruba speaking ones who say Desmond never identified with them and never accepted that he was a Yoruba man, only accepting the fact because he wants to go into politics. Some took to social media to express their dismay at the sudden cropping up of the name Oluwashola. One Blessing Efam had this to say: «Very sad. Like Jonna who added Ebele to his name in other to fool the Igbos, this one has also added Yoruba name to his name, just to get the votes of the ignorant people that will be carried away by his fame and vote. MzEloh wrote on Desmond’s Instagram page: «And ‘Olusola’ comes out. I thought he was from Delta state? Desmond choose one, actor, filmmaker or politician. Azeez Oluwaseun had this on Facebook: «Olusola… Laughable! Well, let the best man win. If he has anything tangible to contribute, then he should be given a chance. The new name he added though, is laughable. «Is that supposed to garner more votes for him or what? LOL! Are we Yorubas mediocres or are we short of intelligent Yorubas who can vie for office? Why the new name? Tobena blasted on twitter: «This is really funny, though, did he suddenly remember his ancestors are Yoruba, abi where did Olusola surface from, nawa oh…Olushola ko! Olushola ni! «So all of a sudden, he remembers he has a Yoruba name eh! Guy, contest if you want but don’t come up with any name thinking it’s gonna change anything! «I’m sure GEJ is your role model cos you’ve started towing his path of adding Ebele to his name to gain favour with the Igbos. Small time you go come dey tell us how you no get shoe and you dey trek the streets of Lagos! «Who even knew this dude was Yoruba? He never identified as one and now all in the name of politricks, his name is Olushola…..Oga park well biko! Mimi wrote on twitter: «I don’t have a problem with him going into politics, but the fact that he never proudly identified as a Yoruba man (used english names, never spoke Yoruba or did anything to signify he was Yoruba), but all of a sudden, because he’s running for office in Yoruba land, whips out his Yoruba name, tells a lot about his dodgy intentions. It’s such a cunning and manipulative behavior.
